Rude badgering from call centre operator

My wife just received a call from MTN to make some sort of offer. My wife asked what it is in connection with. The operator asked, "Have you been with MTN for more than a year?" My wife said "Yes I am with MTN." The operator got snarky and said, "Yes I know that, but have you been with MTN for a year?" My wife then politely declined the want to discuss anything with him at this time and hung up. The operator called back to "ask if she is OK". My wife repeated that she did not wish to talk to him and hung up again. So he phoned back again immediately. I picked up this time and asked to speak to his supervisor at which point he asked me if I am the owner of the phone (knowing that I am not). I said I am her husband, and asked again for a supervisor, and he asked again whether I am the owner. Frustrated, I told him to go away, and he said, "Go where?". I began to get angry and asked if he was really from MTN. He said yes. I told him loudly to put his supervisor on the phone, at which point he said "Supervisor? Why are you angry? Do you need to go to the hospital?" At which point I hung up again.

We have indeed been MTN customers for a year -- probably for a combined total of 20 years. I am now extremely angry. I don't like unsolicited calls in the first place, and a call centre that is rude and that does not respond to patient (or impatient) requests to be left alone will very soon see me ending my association with that company. I cannot believe that MTN allows this sort of behaviour, and I hope that it can be investigated and dealt with or I am changing my provider.

Please check that this caller was a genuine MTN employee (it came from a withheld number). Perhaps it was some punk running a ****, but please bear in mind that if it was an MTN call, your guy came across like a punk *******.

Good day Jordan,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Kindly be advised that the caller was not an MTN employee. Our Sales and Marketing department do not use private numbers to call our customers as it is against with our policy.

Rest assured, it is not our intention to displease you.

Thank you, Ayanda. I hope that you will consider pursuing the source of the call, as he is harrassing customers and presumably perpetrating ***** in your name. I am pleased to hear that this has nothing to do with MTN.
