Roaming not activated

I am incredibly disappointed in MTN.

At the end of July I travelled to Ghana. Before I left, I checked my bill and it said that roaming was active on my account. When I arrived in Ghana late Mon night, the roaming did not automatically connect. I tried to connect to a network manually, but it also wouldn't work.

On Tues morning, I emailed my husband in SA and asked if his mom could call MTN for me and see what the problem was. She was assured it was an MTN fault and that roaming was active on my bill, but because I had not travelled out of the country in some time, the service had not automatically activated. This person also assured my mom-in-law that the service would be activated in 2-24 hours, if not sooner.
It didn't connect.

Despite numerous attempts to call and mail and tweet MTN, my phone never connected.

As such, I had to use my hotel landline for calls. This bill amounted to almost $40. I would now like to know how MTN will be refunding me for this? I have paid (for over two years) for a service, that when I needed it, did not work.

It's unacceptable.
