Roaming charges not as advertised and no support while travelling

I was in the USA from 10th July to 31st July. I connected to T-Mobile and AT&T. Each time I connected to a network there, MTN would SMS me the rates. I also checked the rates using the MTN roaming USSD option, as well as on the MTN site.

Firstly, the rates SMSd to me and the USSD visible rates don't match the website rates. The rates MTN sent me indicated R1.25 per SMS, but the MTN roaming rates on the MTN website say R5.00. Unfortunately for me though, I was charged R10.00 for every SMS. I'd like an explanation for this, and if there was in fact an error, I would like to be refuned the difference. I ended up spending R100s of Rands on SMSs, when it seemed to me I would have been charged a lot less.

Secondly, I sent 2 e-mails to MTN support while in the USA explaining my issue, and both times I was just told a variant of "Kindly be advised to visit our web page www.mtn.co.za for roaming rates." The actual problem I had was the rates I was being charged didn't match what was advertised, and the best support could offer was to completely ignore the details of my mails and just give a standard "refer to our rates page" answer. Twice in a row. It really seemed that nothing in my mails were actually being read. The responders just saw "roaming" and sent a totally useless response.
