I have been using a Samsung S3 for the last 4 years now, and when I wanted to upgrade MTN refused me.

I took out a new contract last year without a device, I was told in the store that because I was using my own device I would be able to upgrade to a more expensive contract anytime I wish. But now that I wish to upgrade MTN says I have to wait another 6 months before I can do so and also miss out on the special deal currently running where you get a VR set for free with the S7. This is why Cellc offers to buy people out of their contracts. A very tempting proposition since MTN doesn't wish to take more of my money.

Thank you for your post
We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience that you have experienced as a result of this. We completely understand the frustration it causes.
Kindly note that the actual period served in your 24 months contract term is 13 months and you will be eligible for an upgrade in month 21.
We have requested the store management to investigate what you were advised and revert with feedback.
Rest assured it is not our intention to displease you. We look forward to improving on the service delivery to you.
Kind Regards

Best regards,
Thank you for the reply. Not very helpful. Decided to just manually cancel my contract and take out a new one. A simple solution to a simple problem. But apparently MTN employees aren't in the business of solving problems and making more money for their employer.
