Refuse to cancel contract

I cancelled a contract within the 7-day cool-off period. Handed the phone back to the Rosebank branch where nobody knew how to process cancellations and advised me to contact the call centre. After numerous phone calls and emails the cancellation has not been processed and I have had to reverse a direct debit made this month for the cancelled contract. Today my number has been suspended but nobody called or emailed me to find out why payment was not successful. This is a number I have been using for many years ported from Vodacom and I must keep this number but I cannot move to prepaid or back to Vodacom because MTN are holding me to ransom for a contract they refuse to cancel.
