Quick, easy, sensible, MTN is not.
I signed up for a 12 month 5G contract, my router arrived last week, I presented proof of address and ID copies as well as my driver's license. I was told I need to present my ID card (which is 5 hours drive away currently), the driver's scanner could not read my ID barcode from an image on my cellphone, nor from a printed page. MTN mention's biometrics and customer OTPs, all the driver had was a laser barcode reader which couldn't read off my cellphone or a printed page. Because of this I suppose there is no proof I am me. The driver told me there was absolutely nothing else I could do, so did an agent who called me. This morning I did some research - apparently RICA can be done through the MTN app and requires nothing that I didn't already have with me that day. Any random person who does have their ID card can also receive it if they have a letter stating that they can. Absolutely stupid. In all my communication about the contract I cannot find any useful contact details, MTN's whatsapp chat is pathetic and basically just holds a few common FAQs, no way to reach an agent. I suppose I'll need to phone the number everyone phones for everything and wait half an hour to ask about how I can receive what I've already paid for.
I had no luck chatting to call centre agents etc. The only communication that I received after the failed delivery was a phone call in which I was given a number to call once I had my ID card with me. Eventually I returned from fetching my ID card which was 5 hours away, I called the number and found out it was merely the courier who told me that they no longer had a package for me. Spent much too long hopping around the call centre again and found out that my order/contract had been cancelled.
I tried to order again last night, both from mobile and then from my laptop, the package I had signed up for is now R50 per month more expensive. The site requires you to first enter your address (and enter it again every single time you look at a different package). Most interestingly the R50 more expensive package and anything more expensive was available to me, anything cheaper and I get the message that my area is not covered. Same 4G/5G device and yet if I want 100GB less per month MTN claims my area is not covered.
