Poor systems and service

I phone is completely dead. Went to an mtn shop for assistance as it is an mtn phone still under warranty and was advised to go to back to the retailer for assistance as they keep all records on file. Now my issue is a bit difficult as I got the phone as a gift my boyfriend who recently passed away. I explained this to the ladies in the store and asked them to check their records using the devices IMEI number as I still have the box. They told me they can do that but because I do not have the proof of purchase they can not check for me I need to have my late partners details for them to help or I'd have to pay a fee for the request. I agreed to then pay for the repairs but then still insisted bring my late partners details. Was advised at Mtn that the IMEI number was all I needed as that can help pick up any information about where and when the phone was bought including invoice details. So why am I know been given grief about this and asked that the person who bought the phone return it themselve or get his person details to get assistance even when I offered to pay for the repair work myself.

Other network have a very quick and efficient system for servicing warranty and repair queries. I will not be able to provide any of my late partners paperwork at the moment. And i am willing to pay for the repairs myself ..Please advise what can be done so long.
