Pathetic Customer Service Experience at MTN The Grove

On 2 April 2026, I opened a 36-month contract at MTN The Grove for two Samsung A26 devices. I was assisted by sales consultant Itumeleng Moshalalebana. As part of the advertised promotion, the deal included 12 months free Samsung SOS subscription services as well as two R500 Mastercard vouchers — one for each device purchased. During the sales process, I specifically requested assistance and clarification regarding the process to redeem the Mastercard vouchers. Unfortunately, it immediately became apparent that the consultant lacked proper product knowledge and understanding of the promotion being sold. Instead of providing clear guidance, I was vaguely told that the vouchers could be redeemed through the Samsung Members app. This level of incompetence is completely unacceptable. Staff members who sell products and promotions to customers should fully understand how those services work and be able to explain the process confidently and accurately. After setting up my devices myself, I discovered there were no vouchers available or visible on the Samsung Members app as I had been told. I then had to waste additional time trying to resolve the issue independently because no proper assistance had been provided at the point of sale. On 17 May 2026, I returned to the branch for the third time seeking assistance. Shockingly, every staff member I dealt with displayed the same blank expressions, lack of urgency, and complete disinterest in helping resolve the matter. There appeared to be no accountability, no product knowledge, and absolutely no customer care. Even after I stated that I intended to publicly write about the pathetic service I had received, there was still no concern shown by staff members. Their attitude remained dismissive and uninterested. This experience reflects extremely poorly on MTN customer service standards at The Grove branch. Customers should not have to repeatedly return to a store because employees do not understand the promotions they are selling. It is unacceptable for a major telecommunications provider to advertise benefits and incentives that branch staff cannot explain, process, or support. I personally will never set foot in that outlet again and would strongly advise other customers to avoid this branch due to the poor service levels, lack of professionalism, and inadequate customer support. I took photographs on the day the contract was opened clearly showing the advertised promotion, and there was no stated expiry date or deadline attached to the redemption of the two R500 Mastercard vouchers. MTN must honour what was advertised and immediately process the two vouchers accordingly. Furthermore, MTN management should urgently ensure that sales personnel are properly trained on the products, promotions, and services they sell. Customers deserve competent assistance, accurate information, and professional service — none of which were provided during this experience.
