Overcharged by MTN

Getting MTN to resolve a problem is like talking to a faceless person, left alone the number off unanswered calls for assistance on the 808 client service number and I say this with respect to the call centre staff, when you get through, they are friendly but they are just not in a position to assist and e-mails send to seek assistance fell on death ears or are just ignored because it is not important.

I was billed for excess data use or out of pocket data use as I understand it on a data card contract that I had with MTN over a number of years and had to pay R2,687.72 at the end of December 2016 for the apparent use of just over 3 giga bytes of data. I was not aware that it was possible to exceed the data bundle limit and I never had this problem over years, in fact on most occasions I did not even use all the data on the bundle that I received. To charge R2,687.72 for the amount of excess data used is ridiculous and it is nothing less than theft when compared to what is reasonably charged for data at present. At the end of January 2017, I was billed with another R4,915.84 for the use of excess data after I cancelled the data card and up to this day I could not get MTN to tell me how this amount was made up and what happened to data that I purchased on the data card in question just before it was suspended in January 2017.

My issues are that I was not made aware that the contractual data volume allocated could be exceeded and that it will be billed at such a ridiculously high price and I was not warned that the data was about to go "out of bundle" or to soft block the account before allowing it to run into such unreasonable amounts. I did not agree for MTN to raise debit orders in excess of the contractual monthly payments for all my top-up contracts.

After paying the R2,687.22, I was not comfortable to pay another R4,915.84 for something that I was not in agreement with, not warned about or not knowing why I need to pay it and I cancelled the debit order payment and continue paying the cell phone contract at a MTN store. Subsequently this one remaining top-up cell contract, that has nothing to do with the data card account in question and fully paid since it started about 18 years ago, was suspended.

I sadly realised that MTN does not value their loyal clients making use of their services over many years. I feel like MTN ****** me and surely this cannot be lawful.
