I have taken over a MTN contract from my previous employer when I resigned at the end of March 2015. I was due for an upgrade last year in May / June but since I knew that I was going, I did not upgrade / renew the contract but rather opted to extend it month by month. I chose a cheaper package - Anytime 100 instead of the more expensive one that I had while working at the company. Since I was not in the middle of a long term contract, I did not expect any penalties. The salesperson did not mention any penalties. All he said was that the first installment will be debited from my bank account at the end of April and that this installment will be double - i.e. 2 x R379 = around R760 - which was the amount that I expected to pay end of April.

Today I checked my bank statement - my account was debited with the amount of R3365.88. II tried to register and log into the MTN Active site but after much frustration I decided to rather phone the helpline. More frustration!!

Eventually I spoke to an agent who explained to me that a handset clawback fee of R2051 was charged because of the cheaper package! Redicilous!! I'll appreciate urgent feedback from MTN
