Nobody available to cancel my contract

Why is it so impossible to cancel a contract? My cell phone contract ended in May. I would like to go to prepaid ASAP!!. I no longer have a phone right now, so I am also paying for nothing as well as an expired contract. Why is that when I phone the call centre that the phone is answered immediately before even the first ring if I chose the \open contract option'? But no body ever answers if I want to cancel my contract. I tried this option about 6 times
