My experience with MTN
Noticing that the MTN network offered a better signal in the area I am at, I purchased a SIM.
The SIM received a number and was activated via the normal route. Purchased R200 airtime and awaited the allocation.
The next morning, received a second sms, and the SIM now was allocated a different number.
Phoned support, they confirmed they see the aitime on the first, but has no clue why the SIM changed numbers. Got a ticket reference and was to be contacted Monday.
Phoned on the Monday to follow up. They will contact me back.
By Wednesday , received no feedback. Phoned again. After hours on the phone trying to explain they instructed to do a sim swop. I must buy a new sim, and phone them.
Bought a new sim and phoned as instructed. Now they tell me to simply follow the sim swap process on the pamphlet. I wanted to do that initially but thought let me just follow their lead. So they just told me to do what I thought was going to happen in any case. Hung up and started the process:
Attempt 1: fails Attempt 2: fails Attempt 3-5: fails. At this point the process tells me to contact support.
Phones support. I explain the situation again, and the operator attempts the sim swop from her side... Fails.
Their solution is to buy another SIM to do a sim swop. I explained this is what I am attempting and insist on logging a fault with technical. Thy now get into a verbal battle on whether it is a technical problem or not.
But tell me: Allocating a number, then allocating a second new number to a sim seems like an error. They say "no, there system works fine". The SIM swap process fails multiple times. They say "no, the SIM swop process works". Did I just enter the twilight zone? I got a small glimpse of what the Bible means when it says sound reasoning will be wanting in the latter days. So I quit trying to tell them that another swop process won't work on the original number.
Their next solution is for me to get an affidavit from the police to swear the SIMs are mine and then attempt the swop at an MTN store.
So, weighing my options: Do I waste more time and petrol on MTN.... No! Never again. Mourned over the R200 and 130km petrol loss used for this SIM (yes, nearest place to buy sims is 30km away, so, a 60km journey each time). Let's see where this process is going.
MTN SIMS now where they belong - The dustbin. Never wasting another cent on them. Move to Telkom or Vodacom, before MTN swindle you out of your number and money too, is my advice.
