MTN - zero customer service, and devious deals too
I went to the MTN website where it has the create your own deal option, and was pleasantly surprised to be able to set up a deal with R99 per month for airtime (50 min and 50 sms's, and 350mb of data), and a phone (advertised as a 32Gb phone), for R31 per month. I added a bolt on databundle of 1Gb per month, and the deal would cost me around R225.00 per month. However, there was some delay in approval and delivery - and I went to the Store at Key West, where they told me they could give me essentially the same deal, and they have phone in stock. Upon closer inspection of the handset, I was told that particular handset does not come in a 32gb version - only 16gb version. The lady in store explained, when I showed her the offer on the MTN web site, that this was '**** advertising'. So much for the wonderful deal. They offered me a slightly more expensive package - at R329.00 pm, but now with a Huawei P20 64gb phone. My wife has this same phone - so I knew the phone supported and worked with dual sim's (which had always been a requirement of mine, and I checked specs of phones on the net to ensure they did support the feature). When I opened the phone, and loaded my sim cards, I discovered the phone does not see the second sim. I went back to the store and reported that the phone will not see the second sim card - and was told none of the MTN phones supports dual sims. So it turned out the phone and deal offered to me was not what I thought it was, and was not suitable to me. In stead of understanding why I could not accept the phone which I was essentially cheated into getting, the staff at the MTN store in Key West Mall in Krugersdorp, proceeded to accuse me of not explaining to them that I needed a dual sim phone, (which is a lie), and also denied the whole discussion around the false offer on the MTN website we had the day before. They refused to take back the phone they got me to sign for unders false pretences, and furthermore gloated that they do not do cancellations, even though this is a right I have under the consumer protection act. Particularly unhelpful staff members were Samantha Jonas, the store manager, and Douw van Wyk, who called himself the regional manager. The end result of this unfortunate escapade is that I now sit with the onus to fight MTN about a deal I was ******* into taking by devious selling practices. Watch when you deal with MTN and its representatives. (You can verify this by looking at the complaints lodged against them here on Hellopeter - I see numerous consumers are unhappy with them just in the last 2 days
