MTN *****ULENTLY ACCELERATING THEIR TARGETS BY BILLING UNSUSPECTING CUSTOMERS
I am a deeply frustrated and loyal customer of MTN, having done business with them for the past 15 years. Recently, I discovered an unknown debt of nearly R10,000 on my credit profile while checking my score on ClearScore. Shocked by this, I attempted to contact MTN, but have been continuously passed from one department to another without a proper resolution.
MTN claims that this debt is tied to a data contract I had with them, which started in 2022 and ended in March 2024. I do not dispute the existence of the contract. However, when my contract was nearing its end, I was contacted by one of their representatives who tried to persuade me into renewing it. I clearly informed the representative that I would not be renewing the contract, and instead, requested for the contract to be canceled at the end of the term, and for my number to be switched back to prepaid. The representative assured me that the contract would be canceled and promised to send a confirmation email. That email never arrived.
At the end of March, I removed the data SIM card and stopped using it entirely, as my workplace had provided new cellphone packages with sufficient data. Since my contract payments had previously been deducted from my account, I noticed that the following month no deductions were made, which led me to believe the contract had indeed ended.
To my shock, I now discover that I have been accumulating debt for the past six months for an account I believed was closed. Even more alarming is the fact that no deductions were made from my bank account during this period, yet the debt kept accruing. How is this possible? How can MTN bill me for a service I did not use or benefit from?
I find this situation unacceptable. It is clear that this is a mistake on MTN's part, and I demand to know how this is legal. This issue needs to be properly resolved immediately. I should not be held accountable for charges on a contract I specifically asked to be canceled, nor should my credit score be affected by MTN's failure to follow through on my cancellation request.
