In 2022 I took out a 24 months home wifi contract with MTN for R249 at Baywest Mall in PE .End of October 2024 the contract was set to expire. At the beginning of October 2024 I went to the MTN store in Cape Town where I currently reside to enquire about termination of contract and I was told that the contract cancellations are only done over the phone.
I called 135 the line I was advised to use for cancellation on the day and I was told cancellations are only done during the week between Monday and Friday from 9-5. Feeling a bit anxious at this point I called again on Monday and spoke to a gentleman called Gcobani who advised me that I would need to take the router in store for deactivation so that they could take the sim or whatever the story was. I then informed him I no longer live in PE and would be unable to take the router in store can I ask someone to take it in on my behalf and he said yes then the store would call me to continue with the cancellation over the phone. I made arrangements for my brother to take the router in as advised by the service agent. When he got to Baywest MTN he was told no they can't do it without me there. Frustrated by this situation, and its impact on my finances due to delays that will not be considered as theirs, I wrote an email asking them to please cancel the contract immediately because I could no longer afford it after they deducted R749 (three times) the initial agreed upon amount from my account this month. I called again and was informed that the contract had indeed been cancelled when I asked that they breakdown the way they billed me for October R748.00 they said the amount had come as a result of out of network usage. This month I made sure not to use the router at all now suddenly the bill is R648.00 triple the original amount agreed upon when I signed the contract. In October when I started this cancellation process I received an SMS from MTN stating my contract would be changing from R173.04 to R606.95 because I found this increase quite exorbitant I immediately started the cancellation process. Two months later I am still battling with MTN who i had countless delays on their side and I feel that these are ******ion tactics.
