MTN's Cancellation Polocy

On 13th September 2013 I signed a 24 month Internet contract with MTN. In March 2015 I decided to cancel the contract giving due notice and the termination date as 23:59 on the 30th April 2015. I should have received a termination statement before the 30th April. I am still awaiting it! Instead I received an e-Mail stating that I could not cancel the contract until August 2015. E-Mails went back and forth in a similar vain and I kept receiving statements which did not tally with each other let alone with the correct amount. My monthly "service" fee was increased {in breach of the contract] and unallocated invoices were added to the statements. In August 2015 I finally received an e-Mail from MTN's Retentions Contact Centre acknowledging their errors and condescendingly removing the June, July and August charges but still including the May and "unallocated invoice" charges. They maintained that I used the internet during May. This was impossible as I removed the modems from my computers on the 30th April. They refused to prove my usage.

Almost immediately I received a demand from Lambrecht Norton attorneys demanding an even larger amount for MTN. It took me six months to get a detailed statement from the attorneys and the statement was incorrect. For 18 months I tried to "talk" to the attorneys but all they were interested in was the payment which changed in amount almost every month.

Eventually, in December 2016 and January 2017 I managed [after receiving several unusable phone numbers and e-Mail addresses] I managed to speak to Mr Mutheiwane from MTN's legal department and, after several discussions, all he was prepared to say was, "Pay the amount asked as it is correct and we will cancel the contract." He was not prepared to consider any possible errors on the part of MTN and neither was he prepared to meet me face to face nor put me in touch with someone who would.

I have also contacted ISASA for help but they were not interested. During discussions with them I determined that service providers like MTN are not expected to work to the terms of the contracts except when it comes to terminating the contracts

All I want to do is to sit down with an MTN official with authority to resolve this problem. I have suggested we meet at MTN's outlet in Alberton City but I have not received any response. They seem to be afraid to talk to customers.

So, customer beware, don't try to cancel an MTN contract as, from my experience, they do not honour them!

This is typical of MTN. I gave them the additional information they requested regarding my complaint on the 28th February 2017 and I have not heard from them since. Today it is the 9th April 2017. I wonder where March went!!!
