They are theives - I recently bought an mtn sim card just to take advantage of a data promotion. I'm using a dual sim phone and making calls from my vodacom sim (a service I appreciate all the more now). I put R25 on the mtn prepaid just to start the sim card (as I say I am not using it for calls) and I have a free gig of data courtesy of Afrihost... within less than a week the R25 is gone and I keep getting notifications about subscriptions I never signed up for... which I also can't cancel because the sim conveniently won't load the subscriptions it is connected to - this is nothing short of theft (have not signed up or ANY service I do not want any service and I know they have taken the money because my phone reflects the single outgoing call I ever made on the sim....
As far as I can tell MTN has quietly picked R10-15 of my money and has certainly signed me up to subscriptions I never asked for right out of the gate. The abuse is quite stark since this is new phone and new sim - very little room for confusion and even if I have miscalculated my calls somehow there us simply no excuse for unasked for subscriptions- ultimately the whole thing is shortsighted because they might have got the money but it will be a cold day in hell before I put more money on their sim I suggest caution if you use them.
