MTN & Rewardsco: Misleading Sales, Broken Cancellation System, and False “Uncapped” Advertising

MTN & Rewardsco: Misleading Sales, Broken Cancellation System, and False “Uncapped” Advertising Complaint: I am beyond frustrated with MTN and their partner company Rewardsco, and I feel compelled to warn other consumers. In June 2025, I took out the MTN Internet Starter “Uncapped” Month-to-Month package @R295. From the start, it was a nightmare , false advertising, poor support, and now, months later, an impossible cancellation process that has me going in circles for over two months. 1. Misleading Sales and Rewardsco’s Involvement The contract was sold to me over the phone by Rewardsco, claiming to be calling “from MTN.” At no point was it made clear that I was dealing with a third-party company, not MTN directly. This is misleading and *********. When I later tried to cancel, both MTN and Rewardsco conveniently claimed they could not assist, each blaming the other. When I insisted on cancelling: MTN’s 135 helpline told me to go in-store. The store said they don’t have the option to cancel on their system. They called 135 again, who then referred them to Rewardsco. Rewardsco finally said cancellation must go through the salesperson who signed me up but they refused to provide the salesperson’s name or contact details. This is absurd. How can a multi-billion rand company make it impossible for a paying customer to cancel, while hiding behind outsourced call-centre agents? 2. “Uncapped” Internet – False Advertising MTN boldly advertises this package as “Uncapped Internet”, but it’s nothing of the sort. After just 100GB, your speed is throttled to 0.04 Mbps download and 0.44 Mbps upload, completely unusable for even basic browsing. I could not open emails, load websites, or use the internet meaningfully for over half the month. That is not “uncapped” it’s misleading advertising and false marketing. 3. Endless Runaround and Billing After Cancellation I returned the router on 1 September 2025, as instructed, and explicitly stated that I do not wish to continue the contract beyond August. Yet the contract remains active, and MTN continues attempting to debit my account. I’ve since had to cancel my debit order and change my bank card to stop unauthorized deductions. No one from MTN or Rewardsco can confirm that my contract is cancelled. Each party keeps passing me between departments “pillar to post” while continuing to send me a bill for a service I no longer use. 4. Accountability Vacuum MTN uses Rewardsco to sign people up, but when things go wrong, both companies disown responsibility. MTN says, “Speak to Rewardsco,” and Rewardsco says, “Speak to MTN.” The customer is left stranded in the middle. This partnership structure is deliberately confusing and designed to shield MTN from accountability. I am not the only one, many other customers have reported similar experiences of impersonation, misrepresentation, and impossible contract cancellations. Summary: Misleading sales by Rewardsco posing as MTN False “Uncapped” marketing, unusable after throttling Impossible cancellation process spanning over 2 months No accountability between MTN and Rewardsco Unauthorized debit attempts after cancellation What I Want: Immediate cancellation of my MTN Internet Starter contract (effective 1 September 2025). Full written confirmation that my account is closed, and no further billing will occur. Final Note: MTN’s so-called “Uncapped Internet” is unusable, misrepresented, and unsupported, and their partnership with Rewardsco has created a toxic loop of confusion where the customer is left without recourse. If you value honesty, reliability, and accountability avoid MTN and Rewardsco at all costs.
