MTN Retentions...what a mess!!!

A family member's contract ran out (exceeded the 2yrs) and she didn't want to upgrade at that point as her phone was still in order. Her phone's battery is now giving so much grief and she wants now to upgrade. NOT possible, as in the interim, she was phoned and put on R99 contact for 2yrs, instead of the requested month-to-month contract.

To have this contract cancelled is a nightmare. Assistants on 135, Retentions are useless... we have spoken to Joy (just now), Nobele, Keenan, and so many others before. Everyone giving a different story. We have been to the MTN walk-in branches at Tyger Valley, Canal Walk, Golden Acre, Cavendish Square. No luck.

We were told we can 'buy out' the contract for R240. But, do not know where to or who to pay the money to. MTN branches don't want to accept payment, and Retentions online is sending us to the branches. Crazy. One assistant told us that after you have 'bought out' the contract, you cannot use your existing number for 3 months... others say that is nonsense.

The client in now stuck with a phone that does not work, on a R99 contract (which was supposed to have been a month-to-month)... and she wants to upgrade. And, nobody can help her....

I say the best is to take the number and port to another service provider... Vodacom or Cell C.
