MTN Recycled my number while I was overseas. Gave banking details away.
I've had my number for roughly 10. My banking details and verifications are linked to that number. I activated my roaming services and confirmed with MTN Customer Services that I could indeed travel for a year and as long as my roaming services was activated, my number would be fine. I use this number to do EVERYTHING. It was working completely fine for the past 8 months. I just got a popup on my whatsapp while on a (business video chat with a client). This popup says my number isn't verified. When I checked my sim card, there was no network service (no roaming, nothing). I contacted MTN support about this, as I am concerned about my internet banking and account verifications as well as all my client information and contact that I am now unable to access. And I was told that my number has been recycled without prior knowledge. I am now stuck in another country with no way to acces my accounts and no way to contact my family or clients. And MTN is of no help. There is someone who is able to access my bank accounts due to MTN's negligence. This is not acceptable at all. I need my number back.
That option was not given to me. Amazingly enough, it was never even mentioned in the emails I have been receiving from the Customer Care service consultants.
However, your response does not help with the fact that I am now unable to access my bank account, which means I am in another country, no way to cover my expenses. I was given false and incomplete information by an MTN consultant and no information about extending or making calls on a roaming number.
Not to mention the fact that I cannot communicate with clients nor can I access my home security and because of this, any theft or damage will not be covered by my insurance.
My account had been active and in use by me. I did all I was told to do.
No prior warning or notification was given or sent to me.
If this happened a while ago, that means personal and private information has been at the disposal of this other person for an extended period.
In this matter, MTN needs to take some form of responsibility as I did what I was told to do by MTN to avoid this very problem... but I was still put in an impossibly stressful situation. A situation that threatens my livelihood and my safety and security.
I cannot change my number with the bank or security company as I need to be there physically for that.
As this was clearly an oversight or mismanagement or misinformation by MTN, and now my number has been given away. I trust that MTN is prepared to then reimburse my untimely travel and accommodation expenses and all costs incurred to sort out this "mishap" including; my travel back to SA, getting a new number, re-verify the number with the bank and the security company, Visa and travel costs of returning to Vietnam to continue my work, all penalties incurred for missing work, penalties for late accommodation fees, costs incurred to retrieve and contact my client list (built over 15 years),cover loss income, as well as any theft / break-in to my home and any money lost in my bank account. Please note that as I am undergoing treatment for clinical depression (and PTSD, putting me on the Disabled spectrum). I'm sure you can understand the stress of travelling alone, and as such, you can also imagine, adding this type of anxiety-inducing stress is somewhat debilitating, and will definitely cause strain that would need more therapy, and these costs would also be covered by MTN.
I hope and trust that this explains why I refuse to be brushed off as many of your counterparts have been trying to do.
MTN LEAVES (DISABLED) CLIENT STRANDED is not the best form of flattery.
The service I've been getting is beyond unacceptable and inexcusable. Do your job or find someone who has a workable solution to respond. The back and forth, giving me different and yet useless information to pass the time is exhausting and distressing.

Warm regards,
I answered your email. But to further explain for anyone else that might read this review and want details. You asked for the details of the person who handled my query and also which number I used to contact MTN.
Here's why I have a distinct and understandable issue with these questions.
1. At no point has anyone from MTN enquired as to where I have been sleeping for 3 days, nor how I have been surviving in another country for 3 days because of a blunder made by you.
2. Not a single person has done or given any advice or plan on how this issue can be resolved.
3. All MTN has been doing is wasting my energy and time passing the buck back and forth, with no care to how that would affect a person suffering from PTSD left stranded with no support.
4. Your question, although pertinent, is mistimed and unhelpful as this will not at any point help my current situation.
Asking this very question shows that a customer's well being is the LAST thing on your mind and you are looking for a scapegoat to blame this incident on.
To explain the answers I will give you I'll have to explain my health circumstances, which I won't, however, I will state that I had been on extended sick leave and had been home for 2 months after an op, and was hard-pressed to resign from a position I enjoyed, for health reasons.
My mother was concerned about being able to stay in contact with me during my travel, as well as getting a word of advice from the bank personnel about my internet banking facilities during my travels when I notified them about my impending travels.
In light of this, along with all I had read about MTN and their international mishaps, I made a call to MTN. I didn't take note of the name or even the date of the call, because it was a routine call. Asked my questions, got an answer, moved on. If memory serves correct, I used either the landline, my 2nd phone, or someone else's phone, this I remember as I wanted to be walked through the steps to make sure everything was in order. It was. I also remember that it was a male that I spoke to, but not his name.
Hopefully that helps you, If I recall anything else about the call to make it easier for MTN to know who to reprimand for the oversight, I will let you know.
I hope you understand my frustration as I am facing day 4, with no solid answer of what to do? This might be good on my figure, but hell on my mental health and worse on my safety concerns.
Kind Regards,
Tiyani Maphali
