MTN PERSONAL DETAILS SECURITY BREACH TO DE***** CLIENTS

If I had the option of 0 stars, I would use that.

I was contacted this morning by a person claiming to be from MTN's ***** department to inform me that someone had attempted to perform a SIM swap on my account.

They had all my details including my ID number, bank information, home address, the phone model and contract plan I was on.

I have been a customer of MTN for the past 30 years.

Once I confirmed all my details were correct as it was read out to me, I was told that the person has been added to my account and because my cell number was connected to my FNB account number, they could access my bank account and also add MTN contract to my name to the value of R5,000.

I was sent numerous OTP numbers and despite the warning not to give it to the person on the call, I was told by the individual that I must give it to them as they were from the ***** Department so they can block access to my MTN and FNB accounts.

There is a lot more detail to this complaint, which is sensitive in nature, but suffice it to say, that I have had R5000 withdrawn through dubious methods.

What makes this worse is that I am currently unemployed, and despite informing the person I was speaking with about this, he still had the gall to de***** me.

I told him that I was uncomfortable with the conversation and told him that I would go to my nearest FNB branch and engage with him further from there with an FNB employee to assist me, he ended the call.

I subsequently contacted FNB ***** division who confirmed that my account had been debited, and lodged a ***** claim. I was told to open a case with the police, which I did this afternoon.

I also contacted MTN's ***** division and informed them of the situation and they helped me to delete my MTN App profile so the person could not see my information.

Not only did I lose R5000, but I also spent 3 hours at the police station, engaging with ***** division that I could have spent looking for gainful employment.

The police officer that I dealt with told me that this was not the first instance people have been ****med this way and they get daily cases lodged with this MTN-related ****.

I've had to cancel all my bank cards, which will now cost me money to replace.

Then the person had the temerity to contact me again this afternoon to tell me that we still need to finalise the ***** case and that they want to continue with me accepting OTP codes.

The names of the supposed MTN ***** Division people that I managed to get was Malcolm McKay and Sam Koen.

Whether these are legitimate employees is unknown.

But was it VERY OBVIOUS is that MTN has a data breach either through an employee or a past employee or a very clever hacker.

I want a SENIOR PERSON from MTN to contact me to discuss this matter, as I am furious that my information is readily provided or that somebody has access to it.
