MTN not closing account

My mother has been trying to cancel her MTN account for over a year, the contract expired years ago. MTN tell her it is cancelled and then continue to debit her account. She has dementia and struggles to get into the bank to reverse the debit orders. She has not used the phone in 2 years. Other than the legal route how can I get this account closed ?
