MTN not adhering to Consumer Protection Act

My contract with MTN expired 4 Aug 2016. On the 1st of Aug I wrote them a letter giving them 30 days notice that I'm canceling my contract, as per the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

There was still an amount outstanding at this stage. In Feb 2017 I got a letter from their lawyers saying that I own them money. They were not only claiming the amount outstading but also charged me for Sept 2016 - Feb 2017 as well!!!!

I contacted their laywers and said that I will pay the original amount plus legal fees but MTN responded with::
"As per the Debt Collectors Act, 1998(ACT NO. 114 OF 1998) Regulations , when the account is handed over interest is allowed to accumulate given there is not acknowledgement of debt nor arrangement in place to commit in settling the account. So in this case the current amount owing needs to be paid in full for your name to be updated on ITC as paid and complete ."
