Last year I signed up for MTN LTE at R249 per month. When I asked the customer service rep if the price would go up, he stated that it would remain the same throughout the duration of the contract. He then requested to pay one and a half months up front. This was in mid September 2023. I duly made the advance payment. I received the WiFi router per courier a few days later but then had to wait an additional week before they activated it. So despite having paid for 10 days in September, I only had 3 days worth of connection in that month. In addition, I was then debited again at the beginning if October even though I had already paid for balance of September and whole of October in advance when I initiated the contract. So when am I getting refunded/credited for this double payment???
And now we come to the issue that is really ticking me off.
When I initially signed up the specified download speed subsequent to exceeding FUP of 100gb was 2mb per second. This worked fine for me as I am the lone user of the account. In other words, at 2mb per second, all my apps still worked perfectly.
However, during the past 6 months, I have twice been advised that the download speed after reaching FUP would be reduced allegedly to provide "an improved service to customers" (***??????).
The result is that the download speed after reaching FUP has been halved twice within a 6 month period. At 512kb per second, my LTE has become unusable once FUP is exceeded. Dstv stream has become unwatchable and apps like Spotify and Youtube have become extremely sluggish.
THIS IS NOT WHAT I ORIGINALLY CONTRACTED FOR.
Regardless of any small print, these changes implemented by MTN to drastically slow down the connection speed are not in the spirit of the original agreement. I would assert that MTN are actually in breach of contract. In the absence of this situation being rectified, I am seriously considering cancelling the contract.
Mtn mislead me with false advertising and promotion by:
1. Increasing the monthly fee after assuring me that it would not increase. 2. By double charging me at the commencement of the contract, and 3. Drastically reducing the download speed rendering the service unusable after FUP is reached
