MTN Home Internet Review
Honestly, MTN and home internet should not even be in the same sentence — it just doesn’t work. The lack of consistency, the poor customer service, and the unfair policies make this one of the most stressful experiences I’ve had with an ISP. The only thing MTN seems to be consistent about is cutting off your internet exactly at 00:00 if you miss a “month-to-month” payment. On top of that, they charge a R5000 fee if you miss a payment — supposedly for their “wireless router,” which honestly feels like a cheap device used to squeeze extra money out of customers. To make things worse, a consultant once advised me to buy airtime for the router’s SIM card and then convert it into data. When I called back after trying it, another consultant told me that wasn’t even possible — meaning I had R400 worth of unusable airtime sitting in that SIM card. That level of miscommunication is beyond frustrating. I’ve also dealt with rude and dismissive customer service representatives, to the point that I genuinely regret ever supporting MTN. What really doesn’t make sense is that if you miss a payment before the 25th of the month, you’re cut off for the entire month — even if you pay shortly after. Their so-called “speed booster” doesn’t help much either; it runs out quickly, and once it’s finished, you can’t even top it up. It’s ridiculous. You truly get what you pay for, and MTN should seriously reconsider offering home Wi-Fi or fibre services. It’s an awful experience — from the unreliable connection to the consultants who clearly don’t enjoy their jobs. The difference between Vodacom and MTN is night and day. Vodacom may be pricier, but at least you get your money’s worth and respectful customer service. Using MTN has spiked my anxiety. As someone with ADHD, not having internet for weeks at a time has been mentally exhausting. And when you finally pay, they take forever to reconnect your service — yet they’re lightning-fast when it comes to cutting you off. I’ll be parting ways with MTN soon, and the only reason I stayed this long is because switching ISPs takes time. But believe me — do yourself a favour and avoid MTN Home Internet. There are far more professional and reliable ISPs out there that actually care about their customers.
