MTN Has Been Double Charging Me Without Consent for 6 Months — I Feel Completely Powerless

I’m genuinely defeated and feeling powerless over an unresolved billing issue with MTN that’s been ongoing since January 2025. Without my consent or instruction, MTN has been charging me monthly for the following Apple-related services: • iCloud Storage • Apple Music • Flo Period Tracker Subscription The issue? Apple is also billing me directly for these exact services through my Apple ID, meaning I’ve been double charged every single month since January, with an additional R335 debited from my MTN monthly bill on top of Apple’s charges.

To be clear: I never authorised MTN to pay for these services on my behalf. I didn’t subscribe to them through MTN, nor have I ever been notified or given an option to approve or opt into this. This is the first time MTN is doing this additional billing since I took out the contract with them and I don’t know what possessed their billing department to do that. I logged a query with MTN on 25 June 2025. It took two days for someone to get back to me via phone. The call itself was pleasant, but after that, things completely fell apart. I sent a clear, bullet-pointed email with very basic questions to help get this resolved. Instead of proper answers, I received generic responses …including one suggesting I “adjust my spend limit.” 1. I don’t know what my spend limit is. 2. I was under the impression it only applies if I run out of data or airtime & I’d be able to use additional data + airtime that would be charged to my monthly bill, not for unauthorised subscriptions. 3. At no point did I give MTN permission to debit me for these services.

At this point, I’m being told MTN cannot credit me for the funds because they’ve already paid Apple. Fine. If that’s the case, I requested proof of payment to Apple so I can take it up with Apple then.

I sent this request on 27 June, and followed up on 3 July and again today (15 July). No response.

I’m stuck in limbo, and feeling really bul**** by MTN as they say it’s not their fault (which I’m not even disputing anymore or care about), but they are in possession of the one thing I need to take this up with Apple: proof of payment.

It’s beyond frustrating that I cannot simply walk into a branch and ask someone to help me. I’d be referred to the billing department anyway, who’ve thus far been completely unhelpful.

If the billing team doesn’t know how to resolve this, I would really appreciate it being escalated to someone who does. Right now, I’m left with ongoing unauthorised charges and no assistance, the 25th is approaching and for the 7th month in 2025, I’m gonna be charged an additional amount I never instructed or consented and this entire situation is completely outside of my control. I’ll be the villain if I dispute their debit order.

All I ask: Please send me proof of payment to Apple for the relevant months so I can resolve this with Apple directly.

Update / Clarification:

After further investigation, I want to clarify that MTN was not actually double charging me. The payments were indeed being made to Apple on my behalf, which I wasn’t aware of at the time because the way the invoices and billing statements looked was confusing. None of the customer service representatives I spoke to could explain this clearly, so I assumed I was being billed twice.

While MTN did handle the payments correctly, the issue remains that I was not provided with clear proof of payment, which meant I had to figure out the situation myself. I’m sharing this update to set the record straight. MTN did not take money unfairly, but the lack of clear communication and documentation caused a lot of unnecessary stress.
