MTN ***** Case
On the 16 March 2022 at around 17:00 I received a call from a man saying that he was an employee from MTN and that my number is going to be changed if I do not provide him with an OTP that was going to be sent to me. I asked him to verify if he was an MTN employee and he then provided me with all my personal details, such as my identity number, my address and the name of the bank that my debit order runs from, hence I believed that he was in fact an employee of MTN. This gentleman said to me that my number was going to given to someone else unless I gave him the OTP and he would stop the number change on his system. Reluctantly I did give him the OTP and unknowingly he was purchasing data bundles from my account.
Once I ended the call with this gentleman I immediately contacted the MTN contact center to inform them of what had happened and a lady by the name of Zanele informed me that this was a **** and that I needed to wait till my bill date which is the 27th of the month and contact them and they will reverse the charges. Subsequent to the call with Zanele my spend limit was increased so I immediately called the MTN contact center again, the agent that I spoke to then advised me to go to the police station and open a ***** case, she further advised me that once I have a case number I should forward the affidavit and my identity document to them immediately. She also informed me that I would not be held liable provided I had opened a case.
I have since done what she had asked me to do and I am still being billed for the amount, I have now been informed by MTN that I need to pay the R8000 or my account will be suspended and I will be handed over. I have been an MTN client for the last 26 year, I have been a very loyal customer and have never defaulted on any of my payment. I am extremely disappointed in the way that this matter is being dealt with. The data that was purchased **********ly is still in my account and I believe that MTN should reverse the data and not hold me liable for the account. I am a pensioner with no income and they are now expecting me to pay R8000 that I do not have.
I would really appreciate if this matter could be investigated and escalated on my behalf.
Kind Regards J Chetty
