MTN do not accept returns within 7 days as legally required under consumer act

I ordered a phone and contract online and received a call back from one of their sales people to confirm all details. I made it clear to her that I have to keep my number and asked her what the process was. She said I had to wait for the phone and sim and then phone in to request the number to be ported. I received the phone yesterday and has been trying to port the number. When I phoned in they told me I had to go into the store. When I tried to phone to port the number the phone did not work and I went into a the store they told me it is impossible to change the number once the contract has been finalized and the only option is to send the phone back and cancel the contract within the 7 day period for returns. I phoned to cancel everything I was told to go to another store and tell them to port to a prepaid sim and then do a sim swop. I wasted 2 hours driving to the store and waiting in line to be told again that it is impossible to port my number to the contract. I've now spent the last 1:45 hours being transferred from one department to another without anyone helping me. I now believe this is a strategy to avoid honoring their legal obligation to accept cancellations within 7 days.
