MTN demands payslips even though I'm self employed

I recently submitted an application for a new MTN contract (reference number: MV***7), and was asked to provide my ID documents and 3 months bank statement. After nearly 2 weeks of waiting for delivery for the SIM card, I emailed the MTN agent that captured my application (Johan Janse Van Nieuwenhuizen) and was informed that "according to bank statement client recieves a salary, please provide payslip".

I explained that I'm actually self employed and work as a private tutor for students preparing for university entrance exam for study abroad, so therefore do not have pay slips. My bank statements have payments labeled 'Salary', but these payments are in fact made by me -- I normally pool the income I earn from my students for each month and transfer it into my account as using the reference 'Salary'. The payments referenced 'Salary' in my bank statements are thus not from employment from a company, but rather are the income as a self employed tutor.

Despite explaining my situation to Johan Janse Van Nieuwenhuizen, I received no further assistance, and my application was declined. What has been most frustrating about the whole situation has been MTN's limited communication throughout the process.

Hi Alice,

Thank you for your help in getting my application processed and ensuring that the SIM card for the contract was delivered to me. Unfortunately the contract was not correctly processed -- MTN has not ported my number from Vodacom, and has simply assigned me a new number. I was very clear in stating that I wanted my number ported as I am not interested in having a new number. During my application, I was told that my Vodacom SIM would be disconnected and ported once my SIM card arrived. This never happened.

I've made numerous calls to MTN customer service, but they've been unable to assist me. According to them, they are unable to assist with problems that arise from contracts initiated by MTN Direct, and only MTN Direct is authorized to resolve the matter. I've tried to get in touch with the agent that processed my application (Johan Janse Van Nieuwenhuizen), but he has been unavailable over the phone and he hasn't responded to any of my emails.

I'm currently being billed via debit order for the contract, despite the fact that I have not yet even inserted the new SIM into my phone. It appears that the SIM card has been activated (according to customer service) without my authorization.

Thanks for your time. Hopefully there is something you might be able to do to assist.

Thanks,
Isaac
