MTN Debtors - VVM

I had a prepaid account for my helper about 3 years ago. It was a 24 month contract, which I cancelled a few months after the 24 month period - well out of the contract period, therefore there were no penalties. I went into the store to cancel the service and was told that their systems were offline, and I would have to come back. I went back into the store and after waiting to see the lady that helped me the first time, she assisted me again. She asked me to sign a cancellation for, assured me that the account was cancelled, and advised that there was still credit on the phone that had to be used up within the next week in order not to forfiet it.

About 6-8 months later I received a call and text message from a debt collector advising I had an outstanding account with MTN and R1000 plus in outstanding debt. I assured the person that there must be a mistake as I had cancelled the account a while ago. They asked to send the cancellation email from MTN. I advised I didn't have anything as it was done in store and that I would go back to the store to check. I went back into the store and after spending nearly an hour there, they advised that they were having trouble with their system and couldn't locate any of mey details. I asked for the lady that had helped me previously, the staff advised she no longer works there. I spoke to the store manager (Woodmead Branch). He assured me he would get back to me after checking with another team. I went back into the store a few days later and the manager wasn't in. He called me the next day and promised he would sort out the matter.

After a month of back and forth with MTN and the debt collectors the store manager sent me a thread of emails from MTN head office advising that my query has been handed over to a debt collector DCCM.!!! They could provide no record of my account as it was off their systems. After Spetember 2016, I never got any calls from the debt collector after this. (DCCM and Shaik and Associates...something or other), so I assumed that the matter had been closed.

In June 2017, I started receiving calls from a company called VVM - also debt collectors for MTN. They proceeded to ask me for an amount owing of R500+ advising my "bad credit rating, is on the line, if you don't pay up". This is total harrassment and I find this unbeliveable as I spent so much time and energy explaining all of this to the last company, whom I thought liaised with MTN directly and solved the matter. This VVM company is worse than the other debt collector - they are harrassing me everyday, by calling me at least 3 times a day!! I receive calls from different people all the time. I explained to the first person that I had done all this before with the other company and I should not be on their list of people to contact - and to please remove me off the list. This is utter nonsense from both MTN - who I was a previous customer off - they couldn't call me to advise what is going on -they just hand my information to debt collectors!!! This is absolutely *******!! They didn't make any attempts to contact me over 2 years ago and now this VVM is the second company I have to deal with, when MTN has all the information to clear the record.

Today I received 4 calls from VVM all from different people. This company keeps calling and harrassing me. They advise that their calls are recorded - but if it were, surely they would be able to understand that I do not owe MTN any money and my account with them has been closed.

This is extremely upsetting and frustrating. MTN are the worst "service providers".

DO NOT TAKE OUT ANY CONTRACTS THROUGH MTN!!!

Best regards,
Thank you for your response.
As part of your process you should consider contacting your cient before handing their details over to debt collectors. I am currently investigating this with the following commissions NCC, WASPA, CGSA and the CGSO, to see if MTN is in contravention of the POPI Act as implications of this nature destroy peoples credit ratings, without any prior contact from MTN nor notice of personal information being shared with other parties.
Thank you
