MTN Debit Order Woe's
My MTN contract (number ***) was for a 24 month data contract due to run out on 13 November 2020. On 13 October I phoned MTN Cancellation department and gave the required months notice of cancellation indicating that the contract was not to continue. Reference number given was ***. On 13 November 2020 I followed up again and was given reference number *** ans was told to call back in three days to verify the cancellation. I called back three days later and was given reference number *** Come end of November the contract was cancelled i.e. no connectivity and no access to my profile on their website but they submit a debit order against my bank account for roughly four times what my contract monthly subscription was. I promptly had my bank reverse this debit order. Never heard from MTN again and now at the end of December they once again submit a debit order against my bank account, this time by simply adding a R1000.00 to the previous months amount. Now I once again have to request reversal of this debited amount and each time I have to pay a service fee to my bank.
The notification of contract cancellation was given timeously and there should therefore not be any additional costs pertaining to the cancellation. BTW this is something that can only be done telephonically, at MTN branches they just shrug their shoulders, tell you to phone MTN and they can provide no assistance regarding cancellations at all. Why there are costs after a legitimate cancellation I don't know and it would appear that MTN are just being opportunistic. Early contract cancellation penalties would also not be applicable and contract monthly data usage was capped, and there can also therefore not be costs for out-of-contract data usage either.
