MTN CONTRACT CANCELLATION

MTN has been one of the most frustrating companies I've dealt with. Cancelling a contract with them feels like a nightmare. I was informed that my contract would end on 31 May 2026 and that I needed to provide 30 days' notice to cancel. I did exactly that. Then, last week, I received an email stating that I needed to pay approximately R1,200 before 30 June as a "device cancellation charge." Naturally, I asked why. How was this amount calculated? Could they at least provide a cost breakdown or explain the charge? My monthly cellphone contract was around R691, and I'm not even receiving data or service this month, yet I'm still expected to pay double. A dispute case was opened, but the response I received made little sense: "Kindly note that term date was 31-05-2026 and cancellation was done on 31-05-2026 which the 31st ends at midnight, therefore the System billed Cancellation Device Charge which client is liable for. If line was cancelled on the 1st the charges wouldn't been generated." I then called customer service and was told I would receive a callback within five minutes. That callback never came. At this point, it feels like MTN is doing everything possible to make cancelling a contract difficult. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering an MTN contract to carefully read all the terms and be prepared for a potentially frustrating cancellation process.
