MTN Contract Cancelation Issues

Been trying to cancel my contract. Now MTN says I have an outstanding amount to be paid before they can cancel the contract. How can I have an outstanding amount if the 24months has expired, my sim was suspended and I have not received any service for the claimed "outstanding amount" It is getting extremely frustrating!!!
