mtn cancelation

I had a mtn contract. I called them to cancel the contract. I spoke to one of the consultants and she said the contract was canceled. I was shocked when they sent a bill saying I am on month to month contract. i called them and they said they have no record of that cancelation. I gave them ref no. apparently they are invalid. now I have to pay for something I have canceled and something I don't even need.
