MTN Billing nightmare - Contracted usage limit lifted and full denial of responsibility - pushes the issue back and blames the customer

I have spent the last 5 months trying to engage with MTN.

I have made numerous calls to their Customer Care line, that I have lost count. I have then tried to engage with them via their Customer Care Email.

I have exhausted all avenues to try and get MTN to accept responsibility for a cell phone number on my account that had its contracted rates lifted.

Once you get to speak to someone at on the Customer Care line, they promise to get back to you in the morning, once they have discussed with their supervisor, which they never do.

The standard response to my emails to ********** are

“Kindly be advised charges are accumulated by Packet Switch Data Calls.” Or “Please be advised that the usage limit was never set on cell phone number ********** 493. It was only set in November 2016 hence you were incurring additional charges.

Their responses are scripted, and have no intention of actually looking into the issue whatsoever.

I have now have had to resort to a formal complaint and dispute with MTN, via HelloPeter, and an email to ICASA

Dear Kholofelo, Customer Care

Many thanks for your delayed and long overdue response.

Your understanding of the usage limit is completely and entirely incorrect. You cannot tell me with your hand on your heart that the usage limit was only set in November 2016. It was set in November 2015, so please check your records from that date.

The contract was renewed in November 2015 and limit Set in November 2015. The contract limit was lifted by someone at MTN in June/July 2016, and then contract limit was set again in November 2016

So please let me assist you in understanding further. Contract rate was set in November 2015.

Please see below to assist you in trying to understand. I am not going away until MTN admits that they have made a mistake, and apologise and refund my money due to a MTN error. Alice,
The complaint with ICASA has been closed, and they have referred me to the National Consumer commission.
I am absolutely stunned that MTN have not taken this following information.
1. Michael Antoni from your MTN store, when I first picked up the issue. He looked on the system, and told me, Oh yes I can see someone has changed your limit on this number in June/July. A week or so later after still having no luck with your Customer Service call centre, trying get this issue resolved, I asked him to check where it had been changed on your MTN system so I could get a screen shot record of the change that had been made. He looked again, and told me that it had been removed.
2. MTN are unable to explain, but flatly ignore this information.

Your big bully corporate approach of offering me a goodwill credit, borders on bribery.
MTN are hiding something, and are not man enough to admit fault and accept liability.
I will continue to pursue this

Considering the information I have provided MTN, this was their response
Usage limit: Is where the client controls his own usage, this is set up by the user of the device.
The usage limit has never been set up on the account from the date that Nashua moved over to MTN. The contract was on an open line at the time.
If you accept the offer, please email me with the information for the goodwill credit. the credit will be used against the account balance. My email address **********
The system reflected that the credit limit has been increased from R4500.00 to R5606.51 for the 6 lines on the account in August 2016. . No usage limit adjustment or changes done from MTN side.
The billing department has investigate the request, please see the response
"Please note that SUL was never set on this line. This was only done in November 2016 at the store."

June R65.65
July R1199.65
August 1113.67
September R1078.60
