MTN Airtime - Gone in 60 seconds

This morning (04/09/18) I topped up my airtime with R60 via masterpass (easy recharge) as I have done countless times before. I had intended to purchase a data bundle for R55, but to my surprise it said I had insufficient funds to purchase the bundle. When I checked the balance it showed R14... But I had just topped up my airtime a minute ago?!? Upon calling customer care I was informed that it went to internet usage as I must have apps running in the background. Really? R5 or R10 I can understand but virtually the entire amount was depleted! Plus I have never experienced anything like this previously, my apps only update when connected to WiFi and to lose that large of an amount doesn't make sense. MTN has the most expensive data of all the networks and they still try to cheat us?? I think its time I change. This is just unacceptable.

Good day Nicolene

Thank you for your post.

We are terribly sorry for the inconveniences that you experienced as a result of this. We completely understand the frustration it causes.

According to our records your airtime was depleted due to Internet connections on your phone. Kindly make sure that you have switched off your mobile data or close all your background sessions when loading airtime. I have sent you a breakdown of the charges you incurred because of this to the e-mail address you provided.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and would like to assure you that we are actively working to improve our service levels.

Warm Regards,
