MTN *141*5# Content Services

The rating above only refers to my query. Rating for everything else is good. Yesterday I wanted to google something about Blood Group A+ and which food you should eat (on my phone). When it opened it asked me questions about what I like to eat after that it asked me to subscribe and I exited the site. I then received this sms: Welcome. This is a FREE message. Your Pin is.... Buddiechat and the site. Subscription R15 a day etc. I went to MTN immediately and they helped me quick and efficiently. They dialled *141*5# and cancelled it under Content Services. I do not have a problem with MTN service but MTN allowing these subscriptions to come off customers accounts. Surely this is against POPI act and customers rights. MTN (and all other companies) should not allow these subscriptions. Customers do not sign any documentation, just answer unrelated questions and get billed monthly. Surely they cannot allow this. What about the disadvantaged people that do not have access and/or knowledge on how to take the matter up or complain about it.

Good day Tersia,

Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns and affording us the opportunity to address the same. Kindly accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Kindly note that we are an internet service provider. If the content charge appears on your invoice, it could be from the said site. We cannot control a website which has pop ups that would subscribe you to a content charge. You do however have an alternative option by dialing *156#. Any subscriptions not found on the *141*5# could be found on the alternative. Also, you can check your phone security settings and select block pop ups so that this does not happen in the future.

Kind regards,

Ishie.

Complaints Management Team.

Best regards,

TF

Thank you for coming back to me. I understand fully and can follow these prompts easily. That is why I went to MTN and they helped me. I am referring to the man on the street that don't have the same means as myself. For me it is about principles, MTN should have control over these websites as ultimately these websites add their costs onto the customers MTN Invoices. I am wondering what percentage income MTN gets for adding these pop up websites' amounts onto the Invoices. If a person takes out a loan, an affordability gets done and when the loan is approved, you sign a contract. How does these Pop Up websites know how much you earn and if you can afford this "R15 subscription" per day. R15 per day x 30 days = R450 a month.
