Misleading MTN "You qualify for an upgrade" authorization/notification!

I have been a loyal prepaid MTN user for more than 20 years and has always upgraded when I received an authorization for an upgrade notification.

I was notified that I am due for an upgrade. I checked my status on their online platform and this fact was confirmed.

I did an online upgrade and received the new phone middle December 2021, but on my new invoice an amount of R227.82 was charged now for "Remaining Device Charge".

On inquiry, I was informed: "Please be advised that your previous contract term date was 2022-02-14"

Therefore, I was wrongfully advised by MTN's online system that I qualify for an upgrade (that is misrepresentation). When I did the online upgrade, I received no warning that my previous contract was still active.

This has never happened before and is therefore either a system mistake on their side, a change on their notification policy of which their customers were not made aware of and are not even warned about, or a deliberate attempt by MTN to mislead.

Note: Full explanation from MTN:

"Please be advised that your previous contract term date was 2022-02-14. Your upgrade was an early upgrade as it was done on the 24/11/2021. As of the 20th of February, new options were made available to settle the outstanding device charges. This is why you are still being billed for the previous device."

No mention of why I have received notice and confirmation to upgrade months ahead of time!
