Is this data theft?

I have been a MTN client since mobile technology inception. Over the past few years, I have built up a credit Rand balance of about R800. I am a pensioner, and this is an emergency balance. I renewed my contract last year and was assured that my Rand amount was secure.

Suddenly at the start of this year, an amount of R600 was removed from my balance. After weeks of trying to get a response, I was arbitrarily informed that I have "forfeited" the balance and that I had been informed that I could not longer carry the balance.

I was not informed that money value was to be removed from me.

Since when can a company just remove a value which I have paid for, just be taken by them? Is this not a form of theft?

I completelying understand a rule changing from a date going forward, but to take from a customer account, I find shameful and immoral.

MTN, I think your action is appalling.

Dear Veronica,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused as a result of this and assure you that it is not our intention to displease you.

Our rand value airtime policy did change however, we once again apologize if you were not fully aware of the change at the time. We appreciate your loyalty to our company for these many years. We will endeavour not to let any such disappointment happen again.

We sincerely hope that going forward we are able to restore your faith in us.

Thank you

Kind regards

MTNSA

Best regards,
