I recently ported my cell number from the disaster that is Vodacom. After the porting was completed almost everything was working except for international incoming SMSs. That started the the nightmare. I phoned MTN support 6 times over a three day period. I spoke to several call center agents, supervisors and even technical support agents and no one could fix it. All the kings horses and all the kings men could not get this done. As a last resort I went to the MTN shop in Hartbee****rt and there I met Thelma Mlagane. Click here and click there and 1 hour later it was working. Now let me make something clear MTN Hartbee****rt is not one of the best MTN shops and I have had several bad experiences there, but Thelma knows her stuff.

@MTN This is an issue with your "new" system. It automatically blocks all incoming international SMSs. The reason I know this is because I had an old MTN that was working perfectly until I used the MyMTN app to change the “price plan” and then it started having the same issue. The reason WhatsApp and Google SMSs get through is because they make use of local SMS servers to send out their messages to South African users. Blizzard Entertainment does not so their SMSs are blocked. Thelma unbarred the following 2 items from the barring service drop down and it did the trick on both phones:

1. Unbar International SMS roaming 2. Unbar all incoming (This one I think is what did the trick).

The reason I think that the second did the trick is as it deals with incoming calls and messages from both domestic and foreign sources. I think that all domestic sources are allowed by default, but foreign sources are being blocked by default. However when you request the system to “unbar all incoming” it clears the barring for both the foreign and domestic sources. The first one just deals with roaming so you can send messages when you yourself are in a foreign country.
