I was made to pay for a Sim swap

I just paid R150 for a sim swap, I don't think this is fair. I just lost my phone and need my number back and Im told I need to pay. What exactly am I paying for?? Can someone explain. I've had a contract with MTN for over 8 years supporting this company and when I need help I have to pay. This is ridiculous and I want my money back
