How can I get Mtn to STOP spamming me with MTNReward sms's???

About a month ago I bought an MTN sim in order to use Afrihost's "data for all" deal. I made it clear that I am using the sim purely for data from Afrihost, I am not using it for calls or sms's or anything else.

Yet almost every day I get a promotional sms from MTNRewards telling to recharge and get 3x or 5x the value. I even got one telling me "MTN has rewarded you with R50 FREE airtime valid for 3 days". Out of curiosity I tried making a call and got a voice telling me I didn't have airtime, so obviously this message was a lie or the so called "FREE airtime" has some iffy conditions attached to it.

I have tried blocking these sms's, yet they still keep coming.

I have visited two MTN stores (Walterstone Mall and Stellenbosch Square), but none of the agents were able to opt me out of the MTNRewards spam. One suggested I ring 1555, the other store told me to ring 173 – both go through to an automated system which first warned me about high call volumes and then left me punching numbers for ages without ever finding a way through the automation maze to actually speak to a human being….

I am really frustrated.

As far as I know it is ******* to keep spamming someone, without giving them a reasonable way to opt out?

And this from the actual supplier…

Thank you for responding Itumeleng,

Unfortunately the advice you gave me does not work!

I dialled 173, then selected 4 as you suggested, which is for "Bundles and International roaming". Then I selected 1 which gives a whole lot of info about Bundles. Lastly selecting 0 does not put me through to a consultant, instead it says "Oops, you have selected an invalid option".

I spent another 20 minutes trying different conbinations to try and find a way to get through to a consultant, but to no avail. So I still am not able to get to actually speak to anyone to get this resolved.

If even you, as an MTN expert, are unable to explain to a client how to get through the electronic maze, to speak to a consultant, how are we as simple users ever supposed to manage???

I am beginning to wonder if you actually have any consultants at all, as your system seems to be designed to prevent anyone actually getting through to speak to them.

Wondering if this will ever get resolved,

Alan.

Just a thought,

If anyone reading this has ever found a way to get through to a consultant at MTN using the 173 number, perhaps you could comment here and explain how you did it.

Thanks :)
