Handed over after cellphone contract has been cancelled

I cancelled my mtn contract and paid all the outstanding amount plus the early termination fee. I got an e-mail that MTN handed me over for debt collection? I contacted MTN customer services and their legal apartment with no luck. How can a company’s hand you over falsely and not rectify the problem? MTN has poor and unreliable services.
