Gross Overcharge
We entered into a contract with MTN for the supply of two Gigabytes of data per billing period at approximately R50.00 per gigabyte. During January 2016 we used an additional twelve gigabytes for which we were billed at R990.00 per gigabyte, i.e. an account for R11,880.00. This is twenty times the contracted rate and is the equivalent of a yearlong contract giving you twenty gigabytes per month. I must of course plead guilty to this ********** misdemeanour, but find the penalty imposed to be ruthlessly opportunistic and totally excessive. I have no doubt that the six page contract I signed after waiting for 45 minutes to be attended to, plus being mindful of the queue behind me, timidly refers to a 99c per megabyte charge somewhere in the small print, which incidentally I have yet to find. MTN in anticipation of my objection to the charges levied had the foresight to inform me that I was approved for the credit which neatly covered the account. I find this to be bad intent by MTN who could easily instruct their sales personnel to point out their onerous penalties. The object of this report is to alert present and prospective clients to this baseless, unsavoury practice.
Thank you for your post.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with our service.
We have sent the request to the billing department to validate the data charges on the February and March invoice. Note that the 2GB package is on open package. The 2GB has been used and the internet used further, the extra usage will be charged to the account.
Please be advised that the below service is active on your line as value added services. Please note that Packet Switched Data Calls is established from your mobile device to the internet using your Data/voice package that enable services like the browsing webpages, email, instant messaging or watching videos. The volume is usually measured in units called Bytes. The usage need to be monitored due to the line on open contract and not Top up.
Credit limit is placed on your MTN account as a credit management tool. Please be advised that the account has not been penalized the account. If the debit order returned unpaid the account will be charged with R11.40 for the unpaid debit order.
Kind Regards,
