********** Upgrade without my consent

I had an iPad contract with MTN South Africa for some years. I upgraded around 2 and a half years ago to an iPad mini. The charge, including 2 GB data was around R350 per month. Some months ago, the device was obviously paid off, and my monthly instalment came down to R155 (I'm assuming for the 2GB data bundle - of which I use barely 1 GB). Imagine my shock when I realise that for the last two months, MTN has debited my account with R644!! On querying this theft from my account, MTN informs me that an upgrade was processed on my account on the 20th April this year (clearly not authorised by me). Apparently it includes (among other things) an airtime value of R100 (on my data contract for my iPad, I might add). So I am paying R489 odd more per month to finance a device I didn’t ask for nor do I have (I don’t even know what the device is).
Here’s the clanger though…when I asked MTN to provide proof of when I authorised this upgrade, they respond by telling me that in order to investigate, I myself need to provide them with a certified copy of my ID, an affidavit, and a police case number!! What are these people smoking?
Why must I go out of my way to prove I did not authorise this upgrade? When do I find the time to do this? Why must I lay a charge of ***** at the police? Surely they should be the ones to show me proof of the authorisation of the contract – seeing as though their systems have clearly failed them?
