***** COMMITTED BY “EMPLOYEE” OF MTN

Today I received a call from MTN, and the guy told me that a Mr Lategan had requested a sim swop on my number, and that I had to consent to this swop, or not. I said I had no idea what this was all about and the MTN employee said in order to cancel the sim swop, because it might be a ********** transaction, he would send me an OTP which I had to repeat to him. Long story short, he sent me 5 OTP’s which I had to repeat to him. Within seconds and to my shock he increased my credit limit on my MTN app to more than R19,000 and proceeded to buy data bundles on my account to the value of more than R18,000. I immediately phoned MTN, 135, and according to them it was a **** and it was my fault for giving him the OTP so I am basically liable for this bill. I managed to stop it in time so he is unable to use the thousands of gigs of data which he bought on my account but I have to pay for it. Has anyone else had this experience? What do I do now? With people working remotely now, and the fact that this ******** was able to send me these OTP’s I had no reason to suspect him until I saw the sms’s coming through and became suspicious. I am devastated. How can someone who is not working for MTN increase my credit limit without my consent? How would he know how to do it when I don’t even know to increase my own limit. I need advice. I refuse to pay this bill. I don’t have the money and if I don’t pay my phone will probably be cut by MTN. I use my number for business as well as personal calls. Any advice would be appreciated.
