Excuses when I want to cancel my contract

I went to eastgate mall last week Thursday (30-12-2021) to get my contract cancelled with effect 23 January 2022 however I was told by the agent at the Eastgate branch that my contract cannot be cancelled by them but I need to call. How is that even possible???
