DO NOT WANT TO ASSIST PAYING CUSTOMERS

MTN do not respond to complaints. My wife and I worked for the same company for a number of years. In 2019 and 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the company laid off numerous employees. Many of these employees worked in the department in which I was their manager. What I did not know at the time was that many of these employees used my and my wife's mobile numbers as a reference when they opened accounts. Now on a daily basis we are being bombarded with calls from collection agencies who are seeking to collect money from us. The more we informed these collection agencies that the people they seek are not the owners of the phone numbers, the more the collection agencies call us. We have tried to block these collection agencies on true caller, but it seems that these people have infinite numbers, and true caller do not keep an updated record of the number these collection agencies possess.

I have called MTN on Thursday 23 December 2021 and spoken to numerous people to try and find out if MTN will be able to assist me to change our cellular numbers. On the one hand MTN tells me that we can change our numbers, but are not able to explain the process. On the other hand MTN tells me to buy out the contract and pay MTN R28219.90 and then reapply for a new contract. This is not an option for me.

The situation is so bad that my wife and I are scared of answering calls. We are not in a financial position to pay R28219.90 to cancel the contract. I believe that based on the situation above that I have valid grounds to impose a bridge of contract should MTN not assist. My wife and I are being harassed on a daily basis and we are seeking assistance. Our service provider does not want to provide us with assistance, and are forcing us to cancel the contract and pay money to cancel the contract. Money which we cannot afford at this stage. I do not see how this is fair to expect that we have to pay to avoid harassment. Furthermore, MTN just refuse to address the matter. I have now decided not to pay my contract just to get the line suspended to get some rest from the relentless attacks from creditors.
