I have a monthly limit of R2000 - whenever I reach that limit my services are suspended (this has happened to me on numerous occasions). At the end of May I was debited over R4500 for my MTN account. I would accept that there is a chance that my account go slightly over the R2000 set limit, however, I do not believe that R2500 over my limit is reasonable, and in fact, I believe this to be negligent and reckless on MTN’s part.

Secondly, and more worrying, is that at 16:40 on the 07 May, my services were suspended (I have an message from MTN to confirm this). I could make no calls and when I was not at home (where I have uncapped Wi-Fi) I could not access the net and was not even able to get Whatsapp messages. Yet, according to my itemised data usage, I had R1200 usage the 08 May (the day after my services where suspended) which is impossible. I was only able to access the internet, through MTN, again on Mon, 09 May when I used loyalty points to purchase data.

I have lodged a complaint with MTN directly, and they responded by saying that my usage has been verified (by means of the itemised breakdown) and that I am welcome to complain to the independant ombudsman if i am not happy. They failed to address why I was allowed to go R2500 over my limit, and how I had R1200 data usage the day after my services were suspended.

This seems rather fishy considering they have a massive fine to pay in Nigeria. After more than 15 years with MTN I will certainly not renew my contract.
