Conned into contract by MTN
Hello,my name is Yaseen soobrayan I had a contract with MTN from 2018 to 2019 for a phone and 4 SIM cards ,the perks was free air time of various amounts on the sims. The total amount was R260 it was a special they were having.A few months after ,as I was happy I got myself a wifi sim and device contact with MTN that brought the total monthly amount to R380 . I was happy with the contract. in September 2019 I was contacted by Mondo rewards which was a contractor for MTN whereby a lady consultant explained to me my contract was about to expire and she needs to do an upgrade on my contract. I asked her if I would still be able to keep my cell numbers. She rep**** "No, it will be cancelled". As I did not want to lose my cell numbers I allowed her to continue to give me a rundown of the contract and it's perks. It was very similar and affordable to the contract I had. The contract included a device which I refused as I had many phones and I did not want the amount to be unaffordable. I mentioned to her that I lost 2 SIM cards which I needed to do a sim swop. She told me that she would send a courier to deliver the 2 sims free of charge. I was pleased so I accepted. During the conversation I reiterated many times that I did not want the device and on the conclusion of the call I was asked to answer a few questions whereby I had to reply "yes" and that finalised the call. I went to an MTN store to check up on the contract that I entered into. The salesman told me that the amount would be R1800 which included a device which I was very surprised by and I told him I do not want the contract. He said they make mistakes all the time and that I should contact the call centre. Upon speaking to a consultant at the call centre I was told the amount is R1800. I immediately wanted to cancel the contract and the consultant said they would put in the request to cancel as long as I do not accept the package from the courier when they contact me. I was contacted by the courier company wanting a delivery date and I said I do not want a contract and they must not deliver.
In November my bank account got debited by MTN in the sum of R1800. I contacted the MTN call centre and was told I must go back to Mondo rewards for the contract. I contacted Mondo rewards and the consultant refused responsibility and referred me back to MTN. I got bounced around between the two parties until I got frustrated and found the MTN complaints email on the MTN website whereby they requested my query, id, cellphone numbers and puk numbers. After this I contacted the call centre and they found all my correspondence on my account and he said they will cancel my contract as I received no device. I returned the R1800 with my bank.
December again I was charged double the amount (R3600) and again I went through the call centre and was bounced around mtn. I contacted Mondo rewards and spoke to a lady consultant and explained the situation. I asked her to go listen to the recordings and she became rude and unhelpful and stated it is not their policy. I asked to speak to her senior or someone of authority to assist me. She rep**** by saying Mondo does not have someone else to speak to and she laughed. I became frustrated and angry and told her that I was misled and conned into a contract. She became angry and she I must not speak to her anyhow. She was laughing hysterically when I told her the call is not toll free as they charge 50% of the call to the customers and I have wasted over R500 trying to resolve my matter.
This went on into January 2020 where I got debited once again by MTN and the amount got returned as I do not have the money. I have called MTN over 30-40 times with no resolution. I was contacted 2020 May 9 by attorneys for debt collecting asmy account was handed over by MTN. They are demanding R7800 and I was forced to make an arrangement to pay them R150 per month as I was blacklisted on the credit bureau. Please bear in mind that I discarded my SIM cards from the time I became aware that the contract was messed up and I received none of the benefits of using any of their MTN services that I was contracted to. I am very disgruntled with MTN and Mondo rewards as I was cheated, conned and treated unfairly.
